COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course is intended for those who are interested in real estate. It is an introduction to the profession, and will study the following, in outline:

- Law - Planning - Property Management - Economics - Valuation

PREQUISITE:

No specific pre-requisites, we will, however, wish you to be aware that there are UK Universities that have approved this course as qualifying for Distance Learning Associate and Bachelor’s Degrees. For any student intending to continue to such Distance Learning, a minimum standard of English and Mathematics is needed.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

Be aware of how the Law applies to land transactions.
Understand the history of Planning and Development.
Understand the importance of Planning and Building Control.
Become aware of the differing types of management that land and buildings require.
Have an understanding of how price can be influenced by economic factors-such as control of supply and demand, as well as legislation.
Complete basic valuations for various purposes, (including: sale, rental and insurance), by inspection and analysis of presented information.
Complete basic valuations for various purposes, by completing research, and application of researched information.

COURSE CONTENT

Lesson 1:

Introduction, essential housekeeping, introduction of students to lecturer and vice-versa. Discussion of plans and ideas from the course.

Lesson 2:

Introduction to Valuation, the past, present but not the future! Including standard changes effective from 2020.

Lesson 3&4:

Introduction to Planning-the reasoning and history behind planning and building control.

Lesson 5:

Introduction to Economics-When is a straight line not a straight line?

Lesson 6:

Introduction to Law. Contract, Tort and Landlord and Tenant.

Lesson 7:

Introduction to Property Management.

Lesson 8:

Examples of applied valuations, and the methods that are applied. to include mathematics!

Lesson 9:

Planning and Zoning, and the planning application process in Cayman

Lesson 10:

Introduction to Valuation for Insurance.

Lesson 11:

Economic Development

Lesson 12:

Landlord and Tenant and Strata structure in Cayman.

Lesson 13:

Final Assessment / Presentation / Exam

Lesson 14:

Finalisation, Course review and details of opportunities to continue.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Lectures, presentations, possible guest speakers.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is by way of an open book examination.

REQUIRED TEXT

Handouts will be presented, and course material will be offered by direct e-mail -and for those with access to Blackboard, material will be uploaded on Blackboard LMS.

OTHER MATERIALS

A scientific calculator will be of benefit-separate from your smartphone, as some smartphone calculator apps are simpler than others.
