COURSE OUTLINE

Certification Body - National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER)

This course aims to develop trainees ' requisite knowledge, work ethic, safety awareness, and skill sets needed to work efficiently on HVAC job sites as apprentices. Trainees will be able to install, test, and replace basic domestic HVAC electrical components. HVAC applications include but are not limited to fixtures and appliance installation, maintenance, and repair of different types of HVAC parts and air ducts.

Pre-requisite – Core Curriculum

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Perform brazing and /or silver soldering
  2. Prepare for oxyacetylene /metal arc welding processes
  3. Prepare for pipes and tubing installation
  4. Use graphical techniques and perform simple statistical computations
  5. Carry out routine servicing of coils, filters, and air conditioner air distribution systems
  6. Interpret standard specifications and manuals
  7. Accurately calculate and size HVAC systems to satisfy space demand.
  8. Identify and troubleshoot basic HVAC electrical components.

Degree Plan

Introduction to HVAC

  • 7.5 Hours Covers the basic principles of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning, career opportunities in HVAC, and how apprenticeship programs are constructed. Basicsafety principles, as well as trade licensure and EPA guidelines, are also introduced.

Trade Mathematics

  • 10 Hours Explainshow to solve HVAC/R trade-related problems involving the measurement of lines, area,volume, weights, angles, pressure, vacuum, and temperature. Also includes a review of scientific notation, powers, roots, and basic algebraand geometry.

Basic Electricity

  • 12.5 Hours Introduces the conceptof power generation and distribution, commonelectrical components, AC and DC circuits, and electrical safety as it relatesto the HVAC field. Introduces reading and interpreting wiringdiagrams.

Introduction to Heating

  • 15 Hours Covers the fundamentals of heating systems andthe combustion process.Provides the different types and designs of gas furnaces and their components, as well as basic procedures for their installation and service

Introduction to Cooling

  • 15 Hours Explains the fundamental operating concepts of the refrigeration cycle and identifies both primary and secondary componentsfound in typical HVAC/R systems. Also introduces common refrigerants. Describes the principlesof heat transfer and the essential pressure-temperature relationships of refrigerants. Introduces basiccontrol concepts forsimple systems.

Introduction to Air Distribution Systems

  • 30 Hours Describes the factors relatedto air movement and its measurement in common air distribution systems. Presents the required mechanical equipment and materials used to createair distribution systems. Introduces basic system design principles for both hot and cold climates.

Basic Copperand Plastic Piping Practices

  • 10 Hours Explains how to identify types of coppertubing and fittings used in the HVAC/R industry and how they are mechanically joined. Also presents the identification and application of various types of plasticpiping, along with their common assembly and installation practices

Soldering and Brazing

  • 10 Hours Introduces the equipment, techniques, and materials used to safelyjoin copper tubing through both soldering and brazing. Covers the required personal protective equipment, preparation, and work processes in detail. Also provides the procedures for brazing copperto dissimilar materials.

Basic CarbonSteel Piping Practices

  • 10 Hours Explains how to identifyvarious carbon steelpiping materials and fittings. Coversthe joining and installation of threaded and grooved carbonsteel piping systems, including detailed

This program focuses on the practical skills and knowledge required to install, service and maintain refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Upon successful completion of this qualification, the learners will be well equipped to start or progress their career in the Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Industry.

The program is ideal for anyone currently working or wishing to work in the installation and maintenance of refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems.

Main objectives:

  • Apply safe working practices in building services, and engineering working environment
  • Understand how to apply scientific principles within MES
  • Understand and carry out electrical work on RAC systems and components
  • Install and commission Halocarbon 'fluorinated' refrigeration systems.
