The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) celebrated its 12th annual Capping and Pinning Ceremony on October 9th at Sir Vassel Johnson Hall, recognizing nursing students for key academic and clinical achievements.
This year marked the largest cohort in the programme’s history, with 19 second-year students capped as they prepared for clinical rotations and eight graduates pinned and awarded Medals of Honour for completing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme.
The event was the first since the School of Nursing was renamed the Ruth Eleanor McLaughlin School of Nursing in April 2024, honouring a local pioneer in the field. Dignitaries, faculty, families, and guests, including Mrs. Julie J. T. Hunter, JP, Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Training, joined in celebrating the milestone.
Dr. Belinda Blessitt Vincent, Acting Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs & Workforce Education, commended the students:
“Our future nurses are entering a field that requires heart, excellence, and unwavering commitment. Tonight, we celebrate that journey.”
Highlights included the lighting of ceremonial lamps, recitation of the Florence Nightingale and ICN pledges, and a reflection video and musical tribute. Graduates were pinned by Registered Nurses, symbolizing their transition into the profession, while practicing nurses received roses in appreciation.
A young Caymanian nurse and UCCI alumna from the Class of 2019 Shanique Ayres shared an inspiring message, encouraging students to pursue their calling with compassion. The nursing cap symbolizes courage to persevere and continue to achieving. The nursing pin represents achievement, integrity, and commitment to professional excellence. It is a badge of honour reminding nurses of their duty to provide ethical, patient-centered care.
Nursing in a Changing World
In a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, nurses stand at the forefront, embracing innovation, advocating for health equity, and leading with empathy. Their courage and purpose remain steadfast, ensuring quality care in every era of change.
The ceremony, part of UCCI’s 50th anniversary celebrations under the theme “Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” concluded with a dedicatory prayer and recessional to “The Climb.” Hospitality and Events students supported the evening, which featured live music by the UCCI Pandemix Band and a digital photo booth for attendees.
