This programme is for students who are interested in working in people-focused careers, who want to explore the complexity of changing societies and respond effectively to the needs of people, have a passion for enacting social change, and want to guide individuals to live effectively in multicultural societies. Skills, attitudes, and knowledge that social sciences students acquire, in addition to gaining historical knowledge, are enhanced by understanding self and the world that they live in, and equip them to be ethical and productive citizens. Therefore, any job that needs people who can research, think, problem-solve, analyze, write effectively, and be persuasive will be appropriate for social sciences graduates.
Programme Objectives
Upon completion of a programme in Social Studies or Social Sciences, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental facts, concepts, and generalizations of the disciplines;
Exhibit an appreciation for the interrelationship among social sciences disciplines;
Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental social science perspectives and their application to real-world situations;
Conduct social science investigations using varied research methodologies;
Read critically and analytically, write coherently, and make sound judgments;
Demonstrate the ability to use integrated social science skills to participate in discourse and decision-making about social issues and events of personal and public concerns;
Prepare written and oral presentations that report their social sciences discoveries;
Communicate effectively with diverse audiences;
Exhibit tolerance for diverse opinions without forfeiting the ability to form and defend individual ideas and values;
Identify, appraise, and assimilate published scholarship into one’s own papers, reports, and essays, while giving appropriate credit to the original authors;
Recognise opportunities for social change and develop meaningful strategies for enactment.
