BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN PRIMARY EDUCATION

Description

This four year programme prepares the candidate for a successful career in teaching and learning at the primary level. Methods courses in literacy, mathematics, science and social studies include practical experience affording students the opportunity to connect theory and practice in the classroom. A range of courses promote the aspiring teacher’s awareness of social, cultural and developmental issues of children. Candidates will develop the technological and professional skills required to foster positive development and learning in children.

Programme Objectives for the Bachelor of Science in Primary Education:

The Bachelor of Science in Primary Education Programme prepares confident and qualified graduates capable of:

Creating an effective and positive learning environment

Designing high quality lesson plans

Using research based instructional strategies to promote student learning

Using technology to effect learning

Assessing student learning needs, interests, progress and curricular goals

Fostering positive social interaction and collaboration with parents and community

Inspiring children to become life-long learners.

Programme Length

For full time students, the programme duration is four years (2 years Associate plus 2 years Bachelor) or Eight (8) semesters and four (4) Summer sessions.

Programme Entry Requirements

Completion of all courses as outlined in the Years I & II programme requirements;

A minimum GPA of 3.0 at completion of Year 2 (30 credits) required courses or equivalent;

Minimum grade of a “B” in English 101 and 102 and MAT 105;

A personal statement;

2 Letters of Recommendation;

Formal interview and acceptance into the programme

A minimum age of 17 years at time of entry into the programme

All Education students are required to maintain a minimum grade of “B” in all Education courses in order to continue being enrolled in or graduate from any of the Education programmes.
