COURSE NAME: Energy Auditing for Homeowners  

COURSE#: ENV 100

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The objective of this course is to introduce homeowners to the basics of energy auditing. The attendees will encounter basic principles and ideas about electricity and its consumption as well as heat transfers which impact the insulation of homes. Topics include basic calculations of electricity consumption, the identification of specifications for equipment and materials.

Prerequisites:  Homeownership

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course intends to enable the participant to:

  1. Understand the concept of Energy Efficiency
  2. Understand the use and impact of Renewable Energy technologies
  3. Understand how electricity is utilized
  4. Understand their electricity bills
  5. Identify the parameters which determine electricity consumption
  6. Identify the specifications of electrical devices
  7. Calculate energy consumption of electrical equipment
  8. Separate electricity consumption into clear categories
  9. Gain some practical experience
  10. Identify energy saving opportunities for the home
  11. Understand the available energy services
  12. Make informed purchases to improve energy consumption

I.    INTRODUCTION TO ENERGY AND ITS CONCEPTS

The importance of electricity

How we create and utilize electricity

What is Energy Efficiency and what is its role

What are the relevant renewable energy technologies and what are their roles

 

II.   UNDERSTANDING ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Measurements of energy and electricity

Understanding your electricity bill

Linking your bill to your home activities

 

III.   DATA COLLECTION IN YOUR HOME

Identifying electricity consuming devices

Establishing consumption categories (fixed, variable, climate related, etc.)

Finding and recording electrical specifications

Establishing the usage profile

Calculating the device electricity consumption

Measuring the device electricity consumption

Practical

Examining your building envelope for deficiencies

 

IV.  DATA ANALYSIS

Reconciling calculations with your electricity bill

Categorizing electricity consumption

Comparing data with standard consumption and categories

Prioritizing the opportunities for savings or emissions reduction

 

V.  ENERGY SOLUTIONS

Selecting solutions to fit the presenting opportunities

Determining when you should Do-it-Yourself (DIY)

Clarification Notes:

  • The course will be 10 hours.
  • It will be completed in 2 consecutive Sundays to accommodate most working homeowners. However, any two days can work.

Once the content is fully developed, the instructor must: -

  • Create and mark a simple home assignment
  • Manage attendance as a course result contributor
  • Monitor group on-campus exercise as a result contributor
  • Correct quizas a result contributor
  • Prepare final results for participants
