Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE - Primary)

The Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE—Primary) is an intensive 15-month programme for bachelor's degree holders who want to become primary level teachers. The PGCE—Primary courses focus on teaching and learning methodologies designed to enhance teaching skills at the primary level. Methods courses in literacy, mathematics, science and social studies include practical experience affording candidates the opportunity to connect theory and practice in the classroom. A range of courses promote the aspiring teacher's awareness of social, cultural and development issues of children. Candidates will develop the technological and professional skills required to foster positive development and learning in children.

Programme Goals

The goal of the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE—Primary) is to prepare confident and qualified graduates capable of:

  • Creating an effective and positive learning environment
  • Designing high quality lesson plans
  • Using research based instructional strategies to promote student learning
  • Using technology to affect learning
  • Assessing student learning needs, interests, progress and curricular goals
  • Fostering positive social interaction and collaboration with parents and community
  • Inspiring children to become life-long learners

Certification

The Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE—Primary) is awarded on successful completion of the programme of study.

Programme Entry Requirements

  1. Applicants must satisfy ALL of the following requirements:
    1. Completion of a Bachelor's degree or any other qualification assessed by the Programme Director as equivalent to same;
    2. A minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent;
    3. Minimum grade of a "B" in English 101 and 102 and MAT 105);
    4. Submit a personal statement;
    5. 2 Letters of Recommendation (academic and/or professional; and
    6. Formal interview and acceptance into the programme.
  2. Minimum age of 17 years at time of entry into the programme.
  3. All Education students are required to maintain a minimum grade of "B" in all
    Education courses in order to graduate in or continue enrolment in any of the Education Programmes.

  • Models and Theories of Teaching and Learning
  • Methods of Inclusion and Collaboration/Practicum
  • Principles , Methods and Practicum for Teaching Early and Emergent Literacy/ Practicum
  • Principles, Methods and Practicum for Teaching Early Mathematics
  • Integrating Technology in the Classroom
