Certificate Programmes


Overview

The University College offers a variety of Certificate programmes that normally require one year of full-time study. These programmes are designed primarily to prepare students for entry-level positions in the world of work. However, satisfactory completion may provide qualification for entry into the Associate Degree programmes at the University College. Further, many of these programmes provide students with the opportunity to take additional external examinations in their chosen field of expertise to facilitate international marketability.

Aim

Competency-based education and training is an approach to vocational training that places emphasis on the ability to perform specific tasks in the workplace after completing a course of training. Assessment, which is continuous, is designed to ensure each student has achieved the necessary skills and knowledge required in their chosen field.

Competency-based training programmes are often comprised of units, sub-divided into learning outcomes, and assessment is designed to ensure each student has achieved all outcomes (skills and knowledge) required by each unit. Ideally, progress within a competency-based training programme is not based on time. As soon as students have achieved or demonstrated the required learning outcomes, they can move to the next unit. In this way, students may be able to complete a programme of study more quickly.

Objectives

  • To provide a modern, dynamic, effective, proactive and responsive educational methodology that is competency-based for vocational training.
  • To be responsive to the needs of industry, business and commerce in the Cayman Islands. In today's context, this means a system that provides for sound general education; training that is multi-skilled yet deep enough to allow for functionality in different areas; development of proper attitudes to work and organizational goals; flexibility of programme offerings and mode of training.
  • To respond to the education and training needs resulting from government's social and economic plans and policies, as well as from the commercial and market forces that are re-shaping the industrial sector in the Cayman Islands.
  • To provide training and qualifications in a structured manner through competency-based learning that reflects articulation, mobility and transferability.

Characteristics

  • Programme completion is normally planned over 12 months to 18 months as appropriate.
  • Emphasis is placed on key skills such as numeracy, communication and personal development for the workplace.
  • Major areas may be awarded up to 1 transfer credit per successfully completed course.
  • Workplace attachment for on-the-job experience is gained during the academic year.
  • An opportunity exists to take certification examinations that will support transferability.

Key Competencies

These are skills that are most commonly needed to succeed at work, in education and training and in every day life. Whatever the nature of the job, the more developed these skills are, then the further the progress of the individual. The UCCI Key Competencies Components are intended to develop six (6) vital workplace skills:

  • Communication
  • Application of numeracy
  • Improving learning ability and performance
  • Information and communications technology
  • Problem solving
  • Working effectively and safely with others

The Work Experience Component

The full-time Certificate programmes at the University College combine classroom learning with a hands-on application component that is undertaken both on and off campus. The off-campus component is referred to as Work Experience or Work Attachment and is arranged through Student Services. It occurs mainly during the second and third semesters but may commence earlier than this in certain circumstances.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least two external examination passes from either of the following levels: Cambridge, CXC, GCSE, IGCSE as well as acceptable scores in both the English and Mathematics sections of the UCCI Entrance Examination. A personal interview is also required.

Standing Required for Continuance

Failure to complete the required competencies within the limits of the programme may result in the students being placed on probation, or being asked to withdraw. Students who are asked to withdraw may reapply after one year.

Assessment Strategies

Continuous assessment will be utilized in all programmes.

Competency-Based Training Programmes

The certificate programmes focus on the following fields of application:

Accounting C.A.T (Certified Accounting Technician)
Building Trades - Construction TVET Competencies
Building Trades - Electrical Installations TVET Competencies
Computer Technician COMPTIA (Certified Technician – entry level for hardware, software)
Hospitality Studies (3): Food and Beverage, Food Preparation and Front Office CARIBCERT (Certification through the Caribbean Hotel Association)

Curriculum

Each Certificate Programme comprises of common-core units to be completed during the first semester followed by major, competency-based units in areas of skilled occupations during the second semester. During the third semester of each certificate programme students undertake work experience and may attend prescribed review classes in preparation for certification examinations.
